Finally Young Justice has returned. The highly requested and anticipated hit tv animated series makes its come back with a new 3rd season. After the unjust cancellation of this amazing show DC listened to the fans and after a long 6 year wait, we finally get to dive back in. I can’t say im happy its locked behind the DC Universe streaming service, but I like to support the content I love so I invested in it. But does it possibly live up to the hype? Was it all just nostalgia? Well based on the first released episodes I say it’s the real deal.
Season 3 of Young Justice gets a darker intro that fits the darker tone to the series. The darker themes of the show have always been there, but it wasn’t as noticeable as they are now. There is blood being shown, constant talk of teenagers being abducted and experimented on and complicated moral issues and this is only in the first three episodes. We get a plethora of new heroes, but the focus seems to start with Black Lightning. It looks like the main story point that’s being focused on is metahuman trafficking. Assuming the Black Lightning tv show has a somewhat accurate backstory, this makes him great choice to focus on since he himself was experimented on for having the metagene.
Slight spoilers from here on…
Season 3 of Young Justice takes place 2 years after the events of the previous season. One of the biggest criticisms from season 2 was the time skip. The changes from the time weren’t explained and you had to fill in the pieces in the upcoming episodes. I didn’t think this was a big problem and I’m glad this direction was chosen again. The noticeable changes are Kaldur’ahm (Aqualad) has become the new Aquaman. Im not sure if this means he’s the King of Atlantis or what’s happened to Arthur. Barbra Gordon became the Oracle. Again, I can’t be 100 percent sure if this mean the events of the Killing Joke happened or she just chose to retire the mantle of Batgirl but it does seem like she’s in a relationship with Nightwing. Miss Martian is the new leader of the Young Justice team and became engaged to Superboy. Artemis is living with the clone of Roy Harper (Will) and his daughter. Not sure if they’re dating or what happened to Cheshire.
Lex Luthor is the United Nations Secretary General, and he is using his position to limit the power of the Justice League. This led to inner conflicts in the Justice League of them not able to do their jobs efficiently. Batman quit and lead other members to quit the League to start their own vigilante work.
I don’t have any hopes but high expectations since these first three episodes were so good. I would highly recommend anyone watch these if you haven’t already. New episodes release in waves of three episodes every Friday on DC Universe.
